Sabin Codreanu: First of all, this is the first time you perform here in Bucharest, at the National Theatre. How did you find the audience and today’s performance?

Chelsey Van Belle: It was really nice. We had a standing ovation, which is always wonderful. The orchestra was excellent as well. We did the rehearsal with them today and everything went perfectly during the performance. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Sabin Codreanu: „Enescu Festival” is one of the most awaited festivals here in Romania, and it’s always a special occasion to have ballet performances. The music for your performance was written by Vivaldi. How did you find the music, and how did the choreography blend with it?

Chelsey Van Belle: I love the music. Even at home, we often play it. We’ve been performing this ballet for a while now, so we know the music really well. I especially love the moments representing summer and winter—they’re very strong musically. Dancing with live music adds an extra dimension, as each performance with the orchestra brings subtle differences. It’s really lovely.

Sabin Codreanu: Ballet performances vary depending on the occasion, and ballerinas often explore the culture of the places they visit. How did you find Romania since your arrival, and how was your experience before the show?

Chelsey Van Belle: Romania has been wonderful. We had a long trip—over 12, maybe 15 hours—and arrived at 4 a.m. But we had a day off yesterday to explore a bit, and the weather was perfect. Every stage is different; this theatre is very large. Just a week ago, we performed in Biarritz, which has a stage of a similar size. It’s always nice to adapt to different theatres and experience new environments.

Sabin Codreanu: I know that you have also danced for the Olympic Games. It must have been a special occasion for you. How was that experience for you?

Chelsey Van Belle: It was amazing. At that moment I was just turning 19, and it was my first year with the company. It was incredible to hear we were going to perform at the Olympics. We performed with two other French companies, and there was water underneath us while dancing, which was quite a challenge! The choreography was by another director, and there were also freelance dancers I knew. It was such a unique experience to share the stage and the energy with so many talented people. Being able to say I danced at the Olympics is really special.
